The Florida Gators center John Egbunu torn his ACL in his left knee against Auburn on Tuesday. Egbunu will miss the rest of the season with the Gators.
Egbunu went up hard for a rebound came down and went straight to the floor grabbing his knee on the play. There was talk that he may make it back on the court but upon further evaluation he was ruled out.
It will take about a year for Egbunu to recover from the injury.
It’s a tough break for Egbunu because he was just starting to look comfortable out there and coming into his own. Egbunu just recently had his first double-double and was playing very well before going down with an injury.
Egbunu will be replaced by Kevarrius Hayes, who some would argue is just as good if not better than Egbunu. The part that really hurts the Gators is depth now. With Egbunu being gone, Hayes will start and you have walk on Schuyler Rimmer coming off the bench and freshman Gorjok Gak behind him.
The Gators were on a roll and let’s hope they can remain rolling even after this costly injury to a key player. The Gators are currently a 3 seed and a dark horse to win the NCAA tournament.
